Using the best watercolour paper you can afford is essential. As such, in this article, I am solely going to discuss watercolour sketchbooks for urban sketching. Most urban sketchers use watercolours to add colour to their sketches. Depending on what country you are in, which stores you can access physically or online will effect which sketchbook you can buy. Are you on a budget? Are you a beginner? Do you want to be able to paint many layers of watercolour without the paper disintegrating? Do you need a hardcover for support? Or will you have a board/easel with you to support your book, paintbox etc? Will you be taking your sketchbook overseas? Will you mainly be around your home area? Will you be using only pencils, pen, coloured pencils, watercolour? There are a number of factors to take into consideration when choosing a sketchbook for urban sketching: There is never one answer to a question which starts with “what is the best….?” The answer always depends on the context. ![]() It always receives admiration for its quality and size and I use the storage flap on the inside of the back cover to store items on my travels.I have been asked what the best sketchbook for urban sketching is a number of times. The Moleskin cover is waterproof and the size ideal for rucksacks, handbag or even a large pocket and whenever I have travelled abroad, always rely on it for durability and on our return can use my sketches to work up larger paintings. I particularly love the durable elastic band that keeps the book closed and safe and find it very handy that I can slip a pen and pencil under the band if I am trying to be minimal. I am now on my fifth and can highly recommend to anyone from beginner through to professional who wants to have a pocket size book with such a durable cover, and good quality paper which lends itself to many mediums. The Moleskin is so well designed that it is the perfect book to use for sketching in pen, pencil or painting watercolours. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 August 2019 Quality, indispensable item to any amateur artist who loves to sketch/paint outdoors I will be buying Moleskine again but maybe just in a larger size. I mentioned the black W&N sketchbooks but in my opinion the quality of the paper has changed since they stopped manufacturing them in blue where the paper took a wash very favourably. I have been used to a typical W&N A6 size ( 10.5 x 14cm)black sketch book which is that bit bigger and also slimmer but I haven't used the Moleskine long enough yet to see if I will get used to it's size, although it's excellent to spread a panoramic landscape across 2 pages. ![]() The colour and appearance doesn't bother me but I will not be buying one for my niece because of this.Īs regards the size, it's a bit "fat" but on the plus side it's very solid and theres lots of good quality sheets. Being black and of the size it is,(14x9cm and 2cm thick) it looks like a conventional policemans notebook. ![]() The book is well made and of good quality. I've used pencil and applied a watercolour wash, quite wet too and am pleased to say that the paper handles it very well, better than | would have thought. I read reviews before buying, where a few people said that the paper was better suited to pen rather than pencil.
